Google’s helpful content algorithm update
You might have seen that Google released the new helpful content update on 18th August 2022, and began to roll it out in the days following.
So what is the update?
The ‘helpful content‘ update focuses on how content is writtern specifically content that adds value and is written for people not the SEO bots. It still is good to follow SEO best practices, even Google has confirmed this. According to Search Engine Land the roll out is now complete.
Whats being introduced?
Google have introduced some new ranking factors, this add on to their already existing 200+ ranking factors. The new ranking system will determine how helpful a certain page or article is based on things like time spend on a page, the depth of content(not how many words), if the user leaves the site fulfilled and they do not go back to the search engine to search further on the topic.
What steps you can take
- Start with an indepth audit of your current content see where you can add value or refresh with new insights, or content . Sometimes it is also worth looking for content that is outdated and irrelevant for you to delete.
- Understand your visitors needs and they they would visit your site. What value can you provide them that others are not?
- Dont panic. You might want to rush and make changes to your site which might end up hurting your rankings. Instead use the SEO best practices to guide you and make better content.
